Given Spring Hill's geographically diverse population, many new residents often have questions this time of year, specifically, "when is trick-or-treating done in Spring Hill?" The City of Spring Hill does not designate a day other than October 31 for trick-or-treating. Your homeowners association or apartment complex is welcome to set their own times for events, but neighborhood trick-or-treating is generally the evening of Oct. 31 in Spring Hill.
The City of Spring Hill would like to offer these Trick-or-Treating safety tips to help ensure a safe and fun Halloween experience:
1. Monitor the weather forecast. It’s calling for rain, which may impact your preparations.
2. Children should only visit homes with porch lights on or active Halloween decorations.
3. Inspect your children’s candy before they eat it, especially for any food allergies (some people use teal pumpkins to distribute allergy-free treats). "When in doubt, throw it out."
4. Make sure children know their phone number and address; they should be able to provide this info to a police officer in an emergency or if lost.
5. Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking in streets (if possible). Cross streets only at the corner and never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block.
6. When trick-or-treating, use battery-powered lights, keep your devices charged and pick a place to meet if you get lost.
7. Make sure trick-or-treaters can be seen by wearing something reflective or carrying a flashlight or glow stick.
8. Make sure your child’s Halloween costume is made with fire retardant materials and has eye holes large enough to safely see out of.
9. The costume should be short enough so it doesn’t interfere with walking.
10. Consider using makeup on children’s faces instead of a mask to allow the child to see clearly.
11. Please do not drive above the speed limit on Halloween (or any time!). It's especially important to drive below the posted speed limit in residential areas on Halloween to give you time to brake if you see a child dart in front of you.
12. If you have pets, provide a safe, secure space during trick-or-treating time.
